Worth the Rain

It's raining today.
Usually I like the rain, but today it left me stuck inside, feeling claustrophobic in our little summer cottage. After a too-long early morning with a discontented baby, and a too-long late morning trying to keep a hyper 5-year old quiet so aforementioned discontented baby could nap, I was ready to pull my hair out by lunch time. I stood at the door, staring at the rain, weighing my options and finally narrowed the choice down to a trip to Barnes & Noble. As I packed up the diaper suitcase bag, uneasiness began to creep in and I almost didn't go. Taking a mobile 9-month old to a quiet bookstore in a torrential downpour doesn't exactly set itself up for an obvious happy ending. But the long afternoon hours loomed ahead and so I trudged on, leaving the quiet (albeit cramped) dryness of the cottage to explore the great wet unknown before me.

I found myself pleasantly surprised. Anna browsed contentedly through books and Colson was fascinated by the train table. I quietly sipped my coffee and reveled in the peace and tranquility and new book smell.

Our little afternoon adventure was worth the rain and every penny of my $4.76 coffee. It brought some sanity. It brought some clarity. And it brought the reminder that life exists outside of our current living conditions.

When we began the journey of house selling and hunting, I never would have imagined that we'd end up in a cottage, with the second week of June about the commence and still no permanent home in sight. And yet, even on the bad days, I wouldn't change our decision. Had I known what was ahead, I may not have been willing to plunge forward, but I'm glad we did. I'm glad we didn't allow the comfort of the known to overshadow the hope of what could be.

Today, as I dashed back to the car - feet splashing, daughter laughing, baby shrieking - it somehow confirmed that we're headed in the right direction.
I'm discovering that the adventure is often worth the rain. And sometimes you just have to get a little wet.
